Hi Everyone

Hide & Seek is moving venues in 2011!!! We'll be at the Bernie Mullane Sports Complex at Marella Ave, Kellyville starting in Feb 2011.

Hide & Seek will be held on the third Sunday of the month (except in March, it will be on the fourth Sunday). Dates for 2011 are:

Handmade Goodness: Maddison Scarlett Photography

In addition to our Crafty Corner Segment, where we get to know our stallholders a bit more, we now have a new segment: Handmade Goodness, where we will interview other fellow handmade crafters, makers, designers, photographers, storeholders that are trully passionate about their craft. If you love your craft, we'd love to hear from you. Email us and let us know a bit about youself.

Lovely Jacqui from Maddison Scarlett Photography took some AMAZING photos of our November market. Here are a few of her pics. Her passion and love for photography was really evident. Of course, we wanted to find out more about Jacqui and what makes her click (hehe!!)

Tell us a bit about yourself
First and foremost I am a mother to two amazing children Maddy and Blake who constantly spoil me with their smiles! I am currently studying my Diploma in Professional Photography and I am loving every minute of it! There is so much to learn about photography but its safe to assume that its all very interesting. I love working with mini people! Babies and kids are just so amazing with their innocence and adorable personalities. Even a 2 week old newborn has something unique about them and I love seeing that through the lens. I have lived in a lot of great places as my family is a part of the Royal Australian Navy so I have had the privilege of meeting so many great people along the way. We have been posted to Sydney since the beginning of 2010 and are happy to now call Castle Hill/Kellyville home. I hope to begin travelling as the kids get older. My dreams are to one day photograph the Eiffel Tower, The Northern Lights, The Grand Canyon, Great Wall of China, Tuscany, Abu Dhabi, Rome, and all the cultures and people along the way. Perhaps I will need to wait until the kids have moved out of home before living that dream! :)

What inspired you to start Maddison Scarlett Photography?
My daughter Maddison Scarlett is the main inspiration behind it all. My entire life I have loved photography and everything about it. I loved landscapes and I loved photographs of people in general. Interacting, just being natural. Max Dupain was always my favorite photographer since I was a child. It wasn't until Maddy was born that I saw how amazing a little person can be! That's when my love for photography really took off. Seeing how fast they change there was not a day that passed where I didn't take her photo. This year I was spoilt with a new camera, something worth sharing with the world. It gave me the confidence to begin showing people my photos. Once family and friends began asking me to photograph them and their children I saw the opportunity to turn my passion into my work! They say that if you have a job that you love, you'll never work a day in your life and I must agree with that! I love my job so much! I love meeting all the new clients, having cuddles with so many babies, and forming friendships through business. Making my kids proud of me is the best reward for all my efforts too!

What do you love about photography?
I love the way that it captures a memory. A moment in time that you can look back on for years to come. Our kids grow up so fast and memories fade with time so I love the idea of being able to revisit a memory, a feeling, a moment all just by looking at a photo.

What's the funniest thing that has happened to you whilst on a shoot?
One of the perks of the job is that I get to have cuddles with a lot of the bubs that I photograph. I love everyone to be relaxed during my sessions so much so that I had a sweet little princess pee on me at my very first session! Now I put their nappies back on before cuddle time!

What handmade goodies have you recently purchased?
I am a huge supporter of all the ladies who have stalls at Hide&Seek and from this I have made many friends there. I have a few stalls that I cant keep away from and they are Mulberry Road, Karimu, Kaboodle, IndigoElephant, Snow White Meets Belle, and Smallprint. The list could keep on going but there is one extra special handmade purchase that I have recently made and that was from Billy Mac Clothing. Together with Christina we designed some amazing shirts for my kids to wear when my partner returns from the Middle East in 2011. She showed such amazing attention to detail and the finished product literally brought me to tears when she gave them to me at the last Hide & Seek market. I was very touched and I know that when HMAS Melbourne returns from their tour of duty, Nathan will be also. Its reasons like this that supporting handmade is so important!

What do you like to do when you're not taking photos? Any hobbies etc?
Photography is my number one Hobby but apart from that I adore spending time with my kids! They are after all, the inspiration behind it all!

What's on your craft to-do-list?

I've been wanting to tick something off my crafty list for a while now- Ceramics! I finally enrolled in a local class and I am loving it. It's our last week next week and I really don't know how I will cope, because it really is addictive. Thought I'd share some lovely ceramic work I'm loving at the moment:

Crafty Corner Spotlight- Imaginart

Lisa from Imaginart will be joining us at our October market. Her artwork is just adorable. Here's a bit more about her craftiness:

How long have you been crafting?
I can't remember ever not crafting. As a child I was sewing, drawing, painting, knitting etc as soon as my little hands would let me! I remember as a little girl digging up clay in the back yard and making "sculptures". Imaginart has been a more recent endeavour, starting about 3 years ago.

What do you love about crafting?
It makes me happy. I'm a bit of a dreamer. With drawing and painting in particular I drift into a world of my own. It's a lovely place to be! Imagination is my only limit.

What new crafts have you tried? What new crafts are on your "to-do list"?
A lot! I'm always itching to make something. I would love to sew some clothes for my girls or make storage baskets for their toys. Though I think Christmas present sacks will be jumping up the list.

What do you do when you're not crafting? You hobbies etc?
Looking after my two little girls fills the majority of my week. If I had time outside of this and my business you would find me burning the dance floor at the local adults dance class or reading a good science fiction novel. Two things I haven't been able to do in a very long time!

What new goodies can we expect at Hide & Seek Market?
Just today I have been dreaming up some new original canvas paintings especially for Hide & Seek. I will also have some new prints and cards in stock. Very exciting!

Crafty Corner Spotlight- Mrs Peterson Pottery

How long have you been crafting?
Honestly, since I was a little kid! I've always been busy making something. My first pottery piece was when I was only 6 or 7, I made a little nest with eggs in it and my Nanna fired it in her kiln. If I'm not crafting I get agitated!

What do you love about crafting?
I love how creativity gives the ideas in my brain a way out! It's a process of making a thought into a tangible object. There is so much magic in that!

What new crafts have you tried?
Too many to list! What new crafts are on your "to-do list"? I'm going to look into working with sterling silver. I want to make all my own findings and learn how to blend a few different elements together. I think I'm falling in love with Sterling silver.

What do you do when you're not crafting? Your hobbies etc?
I spend a lot of time learning all the creative aspects to marketing, from business cards to web design, to photography etc. I'm also producing a radio program for children, so that takes up all my spare time!

What new goodies can we expect at Hide & Seek Market?
Lots of porcelain! Lots of variety from anatomical heart brooches to retro caravan earrings to classic floral pendants. Also lots of rice... you'll see

Crafty Corner Spotlight- Needle vs Thread

How long have you been crafting?
Unofficially forever! Officially I started making bags to sell in 2006.
Mum got sick of me asking to borrow her sewing machine to alter clothes, so she bought me one and I haven't looked back. I still have the first bag I made then and I love it, but I'm happy to say that my technique has improved immensely since I made it! I hadn't sewn much since Year 8 home economics class, but I found it's like riding a bike and all came back to me pretty quickly.

What do you love about crafting?
Ohhh, what is not to love?! I get to be my own boss and set my own schedule! I love fabric. I love the sound of the needle piercing though it as I sew, and that snippy sound my scissors make. I particularly love the challenge of turning a rough sketch into a pattern and then a finished 3-dimensional object. I love shiny metal handbag hardware and that I get to spend a lot of time hitting things with hammers. And I love when people see my work and tell me that is is beautiful, or when I see someone with something I have made!

What new crafts have you tried? What new crafts are on your "to-do list"?
It has been a while since I tried something completely new, but recently I've been trying to incorporate leather into my work. It is beautiful stuff but incredibly unforgiving - a stitch in the wrong place and you can have a needle mark that ruins a whole piece! There's a lot to learn about that particular material, but like everything, it's a fun learning process.
My to-do list is currently longer than I can manage, so I'm sticking to what I do best for now! The one thing I have always wanted to try was silversmithing - one day, one day!

What do you do when you're not crafting? Your hobbies etc?
Oh that is a tough one to answer because I turned my hobby into a job!

So now I separate it into work sewing and sewing for fun. Otherwise I like coffee with friends, watching old movies, hanging out with my dog and I spend way too much time on the internet.

What new goodies can we expect at Hide & Seek Market?
I'm really looking forward to my first Hide & Seek Market! I am hoping to have a very limited run of vinyl messenger bags ready in time. It isn't a material I usually use, but I have some left over from a custom job and don't want it to go to waste - plus, it looks great in this style of bag. Besides that, there will be new wallets, new wrist cuffs, a new handbag or two and lots of other girly things!

Crafty Corner Spotlight- Sarah from Roxy Creations

Crafty corner is new and exciting and exciting. I'll be interviewing one of the lovely crafters at Hide & Seek each month. In our first craft corner, we're chatting to Sarah from Roxy Creations

How long have you been crafting?
I have been crafting as long as I remember. Mum used to put me into craft and sewing lessons when I was young. She has always been a sewer, making quilts then getting into embroidery. My grandmother was a crafter as well- mostly knitting. Whilst I can't remember a time when I wasn't pursuing something creative, my passion really took off about 3 years ago when my sister and I started a craft blog for the purpose of sharing what we were making. She lives in Italy and we are both very passionate about crafting so it was a great way to share what we were doing!

What do you love about crafting?
For me it is something I am very passionate about. It is my stress reliever away from work. I love collecting different fabrics, braids, threads etc. then bring them all together to create something new. I am definitely someone who likes mixed media. I have everything from paints to papers, fabrics, buttons and beads. I am not someone who is happy creating the same thing over and over again as I get bored. I love that I can constantly come up with new ideas and thoughts about what I want to do next. The possibilities are endless! I love seeing what other people are doing from all over the world. I get such inspiration from other peoples work. Flickr is a favourite place to be inspired. The other thing I love is that everything is now easily accessible- I can get fantastic supplies and books from all over the world!

What new crafts have you tried? What new crafts are on your "to-do list"?
My new thing at the moment is wool fabrics. I have discovered the work of Sue Spargo recently and have really taken to her style of quilting. Doing one of her quilts is the very first thing on my "to-do'list" when I actually find the time to make something for myself. I like the way she uses different textures to create her projects like, wool fabrics, felt, cotton fabric, flannel, corduroy, velvet, ric-rac, different threads and so on. She also hand-dyes a lot of her fabrics which I find interesting as well. I have started using some wool fabrics in some of my work and my collection of supplies is slowly growing!

What do you do when you're not crafting?
I work full-time as a teacher which I really enjoy, look after my little boy who is the greatest love of my life and play hockey. I am a PE teacher so sport is a big passion. I make sure that I have time to be active and do something that I enjoy. I can't imagine not playing some form of sport and look forward to next year when my son will be old enough to start playing as well. I love watching sport, especially rugby and do spend a significant amount of time doing this type of stuff. Somehow it only just all fits in!

What new goodies can we expect at Hide & Seek Market?
New things that will be at Hide & Seek markets will be some new hair clips. I love creating new designs all the time. Many of my hair clips are one of a kind as I don't like repeating the same designs over and over again. We will also have some new cushions for kids. Christmas stuff will be our next big project- but not yet as it's a little to early to bring out the decorations!

I'm a Melbourne girl...love the cold weather, all the hidden lanes, crafty atmosphere...I could go on and on, but I won't because I'll get all teary eyed! That's why I feel the need to hop on a flight every few months and reconnect..Thought I'd share a few of my fav hidden treasures I like to visit

Nicolas Building- lots of lovely craft supplies like Buttonmania, even the lifts are beautiful. One of them has flowers decorating the entire lift, very kitsch and has a lift operator. They're manual lifts so be careful if you're travelling with the pram, as I had no problem getting in on the ground floor, but then was a tight fit getting out! Go figure :-)

On my next trip, I'd like to go to Thread Den and look at their vintage clothing and maybe sign up to a sewing class.

some great displays to inspire you

A few of you have asked about displaying at markets, so I've found a few important points to consider when organising your table:

Create a banner with the name of your business

use labels & packaging on your goods

create different heights on your table, especially at eye level

Plan out your stall before market day to make sure it's inviting!

Don't take it too seriously and add quirky touches that will make people stop and have a look and a chat

Have marketing materials on your table, i.e. business cards or flyers etc! Something so that people know who you are!

Change in market times

Hi Everyone

Just wanted to let you know that market times have changed from 10am-3pm (rather than 9-2pm). Many stallholders have suggested that starting a bit later would be better to allow travel to the market and also most marketgoers won't make it till 10 anyway on a Sunday! This definitely makes sense! I'm sure you'll all be happy with a bit of a sleep-in!

Workshop idea

Now I've been thinking and I would really like to start-up crafty workshops in addition to the market. You know all the crafty stuff you want to learn but never do. Like knitting, embroidery, applique, sewing, resin jewellery...could go on and on.

Hide & Seek's first market will be held on Sunday 25 July from 10am-3pm at Wrights Rd Reserve & Community Centre @ Kellyville. A brand new centre!!

Looking for funky handcrafted baby & kids goods that will mesmerize us all! There will be a variety of products on offer including gorgeous clothing, handmade softies, vintage inspired creations, lovely designer linens and the list goes on.

If you'd like to come along and be a stallholder and mingle with all your fellow crafters, attached is stallholder info. Can't wait to see you all there!
